I was digging around for period farm photos when I came across this article about Dazzler, the mammoth hog. Three things came immediately to mind.
- A picture of my Grandpa when he was a boy. His dad was a pig farmer.
- This scene from Charlotte’s Web:
“But we have received a sign, Edith – a mysterious sign. A miracle has happened on this farm… in the middle of the web there were the words ‘Some Pig’… we have no ordinary pig.” “Well,” said Mrs. Zuckerman, “it seems to me you’re a little off. It seems to me we have no ordinary spider.” ― E.B. White, Charlotte’s Web
- What in the world would poor Rose do if she had an encounter with her own mammoth hog? Hmmm… Stay tuned for a porker tale of epic proportions in the near future.
Until then, here’s that picture of my grandpa:
I love this connection to your family! That’s a great way to spark story.

Golly. That is some pig. How could he possibly grow so much? And did he sire other big pigs? Also interesting is that 5’6″ is average for a man. Seems short nowadays 🙂

Average height at 5’6″ does make the pig a little less “big.” I’m 5’10” tall, so I have a pretty wide definition of “short,” too.
