The forest wilderness

When we last left Comfort (in Welcome to Indiana Territory), she had just disembarked from a flatboat in company with her guide, Alexander Potins, and was headed north on the Red Banks Trail towards her father’s homestead, when they met with danger.

Panther? No one said anything about panthers!

“Don’t move too fast, Lassie,” Potins said, stepping slowly in front of me. “I’ll hold the wee bastard off until you’re well away. ” He took my valise and eased it to the ground, then edged me back into the neighboring brush.

Welcome to Indiana Territory

When I try to imagine traveling to Indiana Territory [1], the first thing I see is one of those big signs we have today at state lines: Welcome to Indiana Territory.

Of course, there were no signs. No advertisements “Come live in Indiana Territory.” No real estate agents (at least not in today’s sense of the word) offering to make all your dreams come true.

There was word of mouth. And the promise of land.

Oh! And Danger… Lots and lots of danger.

Shiny New Idea

In November of 2019, I laid aside my work on Rose’s story. The story that I want to tell is so different from the narrative that is appearing on the written page. And I have started this particular tale over countless times, trying to hone in on the right path, all to no avail. So, rather than tossing Rose on the scrapheap, I have set her aside. To work on a Shiny New Idea.
